Long Distance Flights
« on: April 21, 2012, 03:26:23 pm »
Having just completed my second longest flight online ( 5 hours, all of it spent in the seat at the computer, sad i know) i was wondering how we go about a flight that requires a refuel stop along the way. I am doing the round Australia ribbon at present and wonder if i have to be careful to select an aircraft that has the legs to do each of the routes or can we land, gas up and continue on our way?

My next leg is another long-ish one from Cairns to Darwin however this time instead of the Twin Otter i flew on the last leg i will try the new Carenado King Air since the Otter juts doesn't have the legs and i really don't want to spend another 6 hour session in the seat. ( Plus it doesn't have the gas to go through in one hit.)

Ty, you certainly can land and fuel en-route, but under no circumstances apply "Parking Brakes", as it will stop the PIREP at that point and it is the devils own job to reset.  ;)

Great, that is exactly what i did. Turns out i may have made it without stopping in Townsville for gas but i wanted to see the MRH90 flying around there and i was getting bored anyway so the approach and departure spiced things up a bit.

In the next few days i may be off the net for a wee bit as i rebuild my system. Hopefully this will help stop the numerous times it hangs, crashes and closes FSX or the frame rates drop so much it is unflyable. I go from 30+ FPS at the start to about 25FPS by the time i taxi ( some add on aircraft are even worse) and by the time i finish a 3 hour flight i am down to single digits at times.

I am going to go from Dual Core 3.0 LGA775 with 4 Gb Ram to an i7 3.4 Quad with 16 Gb Ram and a nVidia 580TXi video card. Hopefully i can run FSX at close to full settings. At the moment it is about mid range on most sliders.

With luck all the parts will be here by the time i get home from work tomorrow and the transplant will go smoothly.

Sounds like a good machine Ty. All the best with the re-build.  ;)
