FSHOST Server
« on: February 04, 2010, 06:15:32 pm »
Alas.. I am sad to report that FS-Host is down and it may be permanent.

A brief background..
FS-Host was working quite happily then...
the server had a hard disk failure and I replaced the drive and set the server up to be a dedicated server with only windows and FS-Host installed with no firewalls, antivirus, it was a dream machine for a server.

but then!

My office where FS-Host was situated had a router that went faulty, shutting down when it got hot (old router no longer available). At the time, we were also moving the office around, so the opportunity was taken to purchase a new router/modem during the move.  We purchased a Billion 7800, the top of the range modem (about $A300), this modem worked great for FS-Host, it allowed remote configuring and FS-Host Spy and players connected without drama.

But.. it had one major flaw.. a firmware bug prevented FTP files greater than 1kb being transferred, which resulted in it preventing me to do my normal work.  So..

I purchased another router, a different brand, a Belkin N1 Mimo (another $A300 modem).. This one allowed FTP to work, so I was employed again, but only allows 1 (yes 1!) port per IP address to be opened..  FS-Host requires about 150 ports if it is to allow FS-Nav as well.. so.. we found we could access the remote server on port85, but in FS, no sessions were found and no-one could connect.

So back to the shop again..  and we bought a Billion 5200, this did not have the same bug as the 7800 with FTP.. ($A100).. and it opened all the ports.

FS-Host port checker shows all the ports open and working correctly, PortForward.com port checker shows all the ports open and no errors.. but when you run FS-Host.. it errors with a message saying there is a Directx error or another server is currently running,  after spending hours trying to find where this other server was (there wasn\'t one!).. and directX has no errors, we even tried 2 different network cards.. I disconnected the LAN cable.. then started the server..

Guess what!.. the server starts and the error did not appear..  plugged the LAN cable back in and the error appeared, and shut down the FS-Host sessions.. and of course there is no help on this error other than it maybe a directx or FS2004 port error (23456), and it says reinstall directx and change the port.. neither of this fixed the problem..

So where are we now..
A FS-Host that wont connect to the net, despite all the ports being open and working (confirmed with 2 port checkers), 2 very expensive router/modems on my desk keeping the papers from blowing away, about 25hrs work and $A800 spent.. and still no FS-Host..

I am all ears if anyone has any suggestions.. send to edwardw@ecps.com.au  until then.. FS-Host has gone.

I only pray that Billion bring out a firmware fix for the FTP problem on the 7800 modem as that was perfect for FS-Host.. with excellent connection and was fast too!

Actually, if I get time this weekend I will reinstall windows and FS-Host once more!.. in case some files have been corrupted in all the works that have been going on.. but if the same error appears.. then I will have no option but to declare the FS-Host dead until further notice.
